Rowland (Rowl) Dudley Bowering, was born at Fitzroy in South Australia on 11th April, 1922 to Parents Benjamin Percy Bowering and wife Ellen May (nee Williams). He was younger brother to Donald Maxwell Bowering

Like his brother he attended the Glencoe School, and then Prince Alfred College when the family moved back to Adelaide. He matriculated in 1939, which puts him in the same year and possibly same class as distant cousin Phillip Grose Sullivan. One wonders whether the two young men knew of the relationship.

He enlisted in the Air Force during World War 2, and Flt. Sgt. RD Bowering was awarded Distinguished Flying Medal on 24/10/1944 for his bravery during a bombing raid over Germany.

On his return from the war Rowland married Shirley Margaret Hocking of Kew Vic (engaged 02/06/1945).

They had a daughter Jan Elizabeth who died in 1970 aged 13
