G5     TS/EWH/EB/ NELLY IRENE GRAHAM (nee BICE) (1892 - 1968)

Nellie Irene Bice was born on 15/03/1892 at Kilkenny to parents William Charles Bice and wife Ellen (nee Henwood). No record of her schooling has been found.

Nellie was an accomplished singer, had passed Trinity College examinations in 1915, and had participated as song leader on a Church of Christ mission to Warragul, also in 1915.

Nellie, aged 24, married Charles Ross Graham, minister of religion, age 28 on 31/08/1916 at the Church of Christ, Grote St, Adelaide. Ross Graham was born in Goolwa on 14/08/1888 to father James and mother Jane (nee Johnson).

The Grahams had only one daughter, Nancy, born 03/07/1917 in Warnambool Victoria.

Ross Graham appears to have been a committed Christian and evangelist within the Church of Christ, and Nellie was a lifelong partner with him. Ross Graham is first mentioned in newspaper reports of the time as a preacher at the Mallala and Long Plains Churches of Christ, and then at Prospect in 1922.  He was appointed preacher at the Henley Beach Church of Christ in 1923, and became Minister at the Croydon Church of Christ in 1926

He is recorded in newspapers at the time as speaking out as a Prohibitionist in 1926, and led an evangelistic mission to Bassendean in West Australia in 1927. In 1927 wife Nellie was elected President of the Sisters Conference of the Churches of Christ in 1927.

The social pages of the Advertiser recorded in September 1940 that Mrs B.P. Bowering and Mrs Ross Graham will leave on a “Murray Trip” so relations between these cousins must have been maintained.

Ross Graham continued to pastor at the Croydon / North Croydon Church of Christ until the mid 1950s.

Ross Graham died on 28/04/1966 aged 77 at Aldgate. He and wife Nellie were living at 155 Strathalbyn Rd at that time. Nellie Irene Graham, age 76, widow of Reverend Charles Ross Graham of Aldgate died at Stirling on 22/12/1968.

Ross Graham was also buried at Cheltenham, in the same grave as his parents-in-law William and Ellen Bice. Nellie Irene Graham is buried in an adjacent grave to Ross and her parents at Cheltenham.
