Ellen May Williams was a great grand daughter of Timothy Sullivan through her grandmother Ellen Wearne Henwood (nee Sullivan) and her mother Julia Williams (nee Henwood).

G5    TS/EWH/JW/ ELLEN MAY BOWERING (nee WILLIAMS) (1889 - 1958)

Ellen, was the first child of  Richard Williams and wife Julia (nee Henwood) , and was born at Gibson St Hindmarsh on 26/07/1889. She attended Brompton School between 1895 and 1904, passing the compulsory standard.

In 1914, aged 24, Ellen, a milliner of Drayton St Bowden, married Benjamin Percy Bowering, a teacher, aged 26. (1) Benjamin Percy was at the time living with his parents in Hindmarsh, his father, also Benjamin, being a baker. His brother Walter Edgar Bowering, also a baker, was a witness at the wedding, as was her cousin Nellie Irene Bice.

The Bowerings

The Bowerings were from Chard in Somerset. Richard Bowering  (a G2) was a shoemaker and was born in Somerset in 1801. In 1821 he married Elizabeth England who was about two year’s his junior. The 1841 UK Census lists Richard and Elizabeth Bowering living in Chard with 5 children including Benjamin aged 4. In 1850 the family emigrated, arriving at Port Adelaide on board the “Ascendant”. (2) Richard Bowering died in Bowden aged 84 in 1885, and his widow Elizabeth also died in Bowden aged 87 in 1887.

G3 Benjamin Bowering, aged 22, son of Richard Bowering, married Mary Wheatley in Brompton in 1859. Benjamin was also a shoemaker, working for 12 years in Gumeracha, 7 years in Williamstown, and then moving to Bowden where he made boots and shoes as well as operating a retail business.(3)  (Hindmarsh Town – Ronald Parsons) The Bowerings had 12 children between 1860 and 1884, all of whom reached adulthood, with Benjamin Bowering junior being born in 1867 at Brompton. Mary Bowering aged 55 died in Bowden in 1896. Benjamin then aged 59 remarried a widow from North Adelaide, Elizabeth May, in 1897. Benjamin eventually died in 1912 aged 75, by that time no longer a shoemaker, but a gentleman, living at Portrush Rd Glen Osmond. His second wife Mary died in 1933 aged 86.

G4 Benjamin Bowering junior aged about 27 married a South Australian girl, Annie Maria Florence Phelps, aged about 21, in Victoria in 1888.  G5 Benjamin Percy Bowering was their oldest child, born in Hotham West Victoria in 1888. A brother (Walter) and sister followed before the family returned to South Australia. The remaining children were born in Petersburg (Peterborough) and then Hindmarsh.  Benjamin Bowering junior operated a bakery in Hindmarsh. Annie Bowering aged 78 died at West Croydon in 25-08-1944, and husband widower Benjamin Bowering died in 31-7-1954 aged 86 at West Croydon.

In January 1912 aged 24 he was appointed acting head teacher at Petersburg.

In 1915 he was appointed head teacher at Ceduna, where son Donald Maxwell Bowering was born in 1916.

Second son Rowland Dudley Bowering was born in Fitzroy Adelaide in 1922.

In 1923 aged 35 he was posted as head teacher to Glencoe Primary near Mt Gambier where he remained until 1929.

In 1930 he was posted to Mt Barker Primary where he remained until 1938.

In 1938 aged 50 he was posted to Burnside Primary, remaining there until 1948.

In 1949 aged 61 he took up the position of head master at Richmond Primary, where he remained until his retirement in 1953 aged 65.

Ellen May Bowering died at the family home at 37 Invergowrie Rd Highgate in 1968 aged 69. This home was quite close to Rowland Painters home at Winchester St, Highgate.

Benjamin Percy Bowering died aged 72 in 1960 at Eastwood, and is buried at Centennial Park with his wife Ellen.
