G4 TS/EWH/ MARY JANE MacLEISH (nee HENWOOD) ( 1870 - 1921)
Mary Jane Henwood was born at Creswick Victoria in 1870, the fourth child of John Daniel Henwood and wife Ellen (nee Sullivan).
Again, no records of her schooling have been located, nor about her early adult life.
At the age of 40 Mary Jane (May) Henwood married Stewart Martin MacLeish aged 45 on 30/07/1910 at the Henwood residence, “The Pines” at Elizabeth St, North Croydon. Mary Jane, still residing with her parents, was a shop assistant at the time, possibly in a drapery. Stewart, son of James McLeish of Terowie, was a chaff merchant, he, Stewart, being “late of Broken Hill.” Pastor I A Paternoster officiated, with Clytie Beatrice Bice a witness.(1) (Clytie was a daughter of John Henry Bant Bice …)
After less than 4 years marriage husband Stewart died, aged 49. He was residing at Elizabeth St, North Croydon, and apparently died at his brother in law’s (William Bice’s) home “Linton” in Euston Tce, Croydon. The cause of death was emphysema and asthma, compounded by renal failure. The respiratory diseases may have been associated with his profession.
His father in law, John Daniel Henwood died only about two weeks later, a double tragedy for widow Mary.
Mary Jane MacLeish, widow of late Stewart MacLeish, died at Mallala at age 51 on 04/04/1921, cause of death Bright’s disease (kidney disease) and congestion and dropsy of the lungs.(1) Mary Jane probably died at the home of her niece Nellie Graham, whose husband Ross was pastoring the Mallala Church of Christ at the time. Ross Graham was sole executor of Mary Jane McLeish’s will. The marriage between Stewart and May Jane had no issue.
Stewart and Mary Jane are buried together in the West Terrace Cemetery.
